A lot lighter footprint, along with the lighter feature set. But if you need a second seat, or portable use, or at home after hours CAD, then Draftsight makes a lot of sense. With large experience of operation in the CAD industry, ProgeSOFT offers the versatile CAD platforms for Windows and MAC and applications for architectural, mechanical, electrical, GIS, HVAC/Piping and some other industries. It is the 'gold standard' for AutoCAD compatibility. ProgeSOFT SA is a private software company which is specialized in cost-efficient CAD solutions. If you already have AutoCAD - don't throw it away. AEC objects in drawings may cause problems, and I have not tried to see how Draftsight can handle that. It's unlikely that Autodesk will offer Object Enablers for Draftsight. The second issue I see with Draftsight would be handling AEC Objects, from Autodesk vertical, e.g. That will likely change in the future, but it's possible that that extra functionality will be at a cost. The biggest problem with Draftsight at the moment is the lack of LISP functionality. Some other gratis dwg editors are restricted to personal use only. While there are Intellicad freebies available for personal use, Draftsight's license terms do not forbid commercial use, so it can be legally used in a business. I've installed it, and played around with it a little bit, and for the price, it's well worth it. It's not a total replacement for AutoCAD at no cost, not even for vanilla, but it does many things quite well. It's a fairly decent dwg-compatible drafting program, built using the ODA libraries, and backed by a _very_ large vendor. ![]()
